Ankle Pain – Question Guide
I receive a lot of questions from readers and viewers from time to time. Sometimes it takes at least 5 to 6 emails back and forth to actually find out where they are having pain.
This video is created to make it easier for you who have questions to pinpoint which area of the ankle you are having problem with. It provides you with pictures from all angle. The Inside side view, outside side view and view from the top. You can now tell me exactly where you are having pain for example: the pain is on point #1 from the top view of the ankle and sometimes I have pain between #1 and #3 right by the joint from the outside view.
I hope this video will help you convey your question easier and faster.
Looking forward to hear from you.

Someone kicked me and I have athletics tomorrow -__-
I rolled my ankle hiking in the woods 2 days ago…it rolled inward & back outward & popped a bit. The pain wasn’t too bad & almost non-existent when I played softball a few hours later. However, the next day it was a bit swollen & hurt & continues to hurt even worse today. The pain is on my right foot in the 3 position on the internal view. The area across the top of my ankle & on the outside of my ankle is swollen. Icing isn’t doing much to reduce the pain/swelling.
Any idea on how bad it is and whether I should go to doctor or not? I’ve sprained my ankle before and had surgery on this same ankle to repair 2 ligaments, but that was 8 years ago and this is a different area of pain.
The top part 1 I haven’t done anything crazy to hurt it and its been hurting for almost 2 Weeks
mine isn’t located on the video, my pain is above the ankle bone on the inside of my right leg, its tender above the ankle bone to the bottom of my shin, I jog about 30 min a day, I know its bc of that.
Thanx Doc. It helped with pain, But I still cant Run. Turns Out its Tendentious, Im Going in For Acupuncture Soon. Thx Again
#1 the last view u showed us! Infront of the foot
I recently had surgery on my ankle from playing soccer. The doctor said it was cartilage damage and he put some from another part of my body to stop the pain. He said it wouldn’t fully stop the pain but it would a little, I still have pain here and there. I want to know how I can stop it completely so I can play again. Should I just continue to stretch my calf and do ankle exercises?
Please help me! I’ve been having trouble with my ankle for about a month now and I am really worried. I am training for a triathlon so I run a lot. I can walk just fine, but once I start running for a few minutes I can feel pain on the “Inside view #3” area of my right foot. So just to be clear: if I point my foot upward, there’s a ligament that tightens up on the top of my ankle, and creates a trough (soft spot) to the left of that (on my right foot), that soft spot is where it’s hurting.
A little above inner #3 is where my discomfort is coming from. When i run and put pressure, that’s when i feel the pain.

my pain is #2 on the inside. I jumped, and the ligament stretched, and i have been felling pain there and on the back side a bit as well.. I didn’t land funny or anything, but rather it was the stretch from jumping which caused it.. what part of the ankle is this?
Could be any of these ligaments: tibiocalcaneal, tibionavicular, anterior tibiotalar and partly posterior tibiotalar due to the pain your are experiencing at the back. 🙂
I’ve been having pain left interior #3. I’ve also noticed some swelling.
I’ve been having interior ankle pain #3. I think I hurt it doing a side plank…and I’ve also been running. It’s been swelling and it hurts just touching it also.
I have exterior ankle pain # 4. I’ve sprained this ankle twice in my life, most recently 3 years ago. It began hurting again after wearing shoes at work for long hours. I’ve changed shoes but the pain still comes back.
i have pain on the inside view of the ankle and it so happens that its actually my left foot that has pain too. The pain is coming between 3 and 4, the second bone closest to bottom of my foot protrudes more then my right foot. I also noticed that my left foot goes inward and has become somewhat flat footed and my right foot is naturally straighter and has more of a natural arch with the second bone not protruding. what can i do to fix this and how severe may this be? im quite worried about this!
I have noticed that inside view #3 and #4 are so so painful from time to
time, starting few months ago, but it’s getting worse now!! When I move my
feet, it’s too painful, and I screamed!!! Then when I walk and walk, the
pain stopped!! But when I am not moving, it starts to act up!! What is
it??????
#3 interior of right ankle. I play volleyball and it is painful to move my
right ankle out to the right and when I poke it hurts
Number 3 outside left ankle. I hurt myself while playing football
4 in the inside of the ankle
